1965 quarter with split edge?

#1 Unread post by Donaserrors »

Hi, I found a 1965 quarter with an odd (possible) error. It's on the edge of the coin which looks like the clad is split and didn't cover the entire planet. Also center is dark and recessed but has ridges.
Anyone have a clue?

Wear? Many 1965 Quarters I find are well-worn . . .

This coin was put into a caustic chemical which removed the softer metal, the copper, first. I used to put coins in nitric acid in chemistry classes to show my students how nitric acid was used to dissolve metals.

Using just the one image posted, I believe this coin is subjected to a caustic substance

Thank you for your responses. I had been so puzzled as there was nothing similar I could find as an actual error coin. It's amazing that the copper would dissolve that much quicker than the clad, but I suppose it makes sense because copper is relatively soft.
Again thank you.
