1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. Re: Error on 1929 wheat penny
Can you say the magic word? JUST KIDDING!Explain to me why the nine on the end of 1929 looks like a cursive q and is in fact raised in a continuous strike.
The 9 was hit by something when in circulation. Coins take many hits and sometimes end up making us think of other things by the look of their damage. How can we be so sure its damage? B/c studying the way coins are made will let you understand there is no way this could have happened at the mint. The procedures for making coins make it impossible for a q to make it into the date. And even if the impossible became possible and it had, this cent, being 100 years old, with literally millions of coin collectors searching their coins for errors in all that time (especially since the internet was hatched and error hunting became the rage) would have notices this. The way coins are made, a wrong letter/number engraved into a die would have to have made many more of the same.
I am not sure what you mean by the S being a continuous strike? To a collector the word strike means for a die to hit a coin and make an impression. Please elaborate on what you are asking.
Granted, you do not get them in pocket change. But look at eBay sold items for a 1929-S in this condition. Generally a $1.00 max in the same condition as yours. Unless they still have all the details just like they came out of the mint (details not worn away from circulation), they do not command a high price. If they have original mint luster and in great condition (not just shiny as a cleaned coin is easily told), then they can bring a higher price. But still, a 1929-S Wheat Penny is not very common at all!
