Hello, my name is Vince. I am new at this and still debating on sticking with this hobby. I was giving some coins recently and it contained mostly silver coins and wheat pennies. I found this almost new looking 1958 penny. Seems to have a Crack in the forehead, a double "S" at the end of states and possible other errors. Please let me know what y'all think. Thank you kindly, Vincent Erhart

It's a very common die crack, some call it a cracked skull.

Hi Vince,
A bit of advice to make it easier for you not to get discouraged and frustrated by posting to forums and getting told the unusual finds that come your way are nothing abnormal or valuable:

This is what I would have liked to have been told many years ago:

Don’t learn the coin hobby backwards.😊

Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage or common anomalies that are not collectable.

Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, concecaonline.org, varietyvista.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.

A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.

Another things is that although microscopes are nice, a USB microscope will have you finding minute imperfections that are very common, add no value, and frustrate newbies when time is made to post online and keep getting the reply of "spender."

Use a 10X magnifier instead to get many, many less "false starts." Almost every collectable error is easily seen with 5-10X magnification.

After you get experience with knowing what actual errors are, you can use a microscope and not be trapped by non-valuable items.
