1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. acetone question
I used acetone to clean a circulated quarter. After I let the quarter dry, I noticed a few green spots on it (on the forehead, LIBERTY and In God We Trust)
The acetone solution was clear when I took the quarter out after soaking for 15 minutes.) Is this PVC? What should I do?

Re: acetone question
Hey L, try dabbing it with Cotton Swabs dipped in lacquer thinner. Dab the green spots first, and look at the swab, if it has green tinge, then you know it is PVC, keep dabbing until it is fully gone, and there you go. I think all you are trying to do is get rid of the green right? Because the coin has no intrinsic value that I can see.LBehr wrote: ↑Wed Mar 10, 2021 5:37 pm I used acetone to clean a circulated quarter. Re: acetone question
Prolonged exposure to acetone erases not only the surface layer but can also physically harm the coin.

Re: acetone question
Joseph, sorry to contradict you my friend, but acetone can in no way react chemically with the metal. This is coming from a former chemistry teacher who has been using acetone on likely a thousand coins (no exaggeration whatsoever) now for over 10 years and not one has ever shown any problem at all. I even once let a Mercury dime soak in a closed container of acetone for one month so I could make posts like this on forums where people have read misinformation.
Acetone is not toxic either (this is the next point people com up with). If anyone could stand to drink an entire bottle of it, the Dr. in the hospital would treat them by having the person lay in bed until their body naturally passed the acetone through. No harm and no lasting problems would be noted.

"Hey Joe, where you goin with that acetone in your hand". You are wrong and the sooner you admit it the better you will feel.JosephBrown wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 12:48 pm Prolonged exposure to acetone erases not only the surface layer but can also physically harm the coin.
