Improperly Annealed Planchette 1994 D Kennedy Half Dollar

#1 Unread post by Sidney60 »

The surface texture is smooth but it looks as though it was sandblasted on the obverse and reverse. I have found 6 of these with varying date’s. Thanks for everyone’s expertise!
It appears that they were just bad planchettes.

These coins are chemically damaged. They are submerged in a caustic substance and the metal of the coin is eaten away.

I agree. Also, we spell it Planchet NOT Planchette.

Sorry about the mispronunciation but I was just using what came up while I was typing. I know that it’s a planchet.
Is it correct to assume then that this is post mint damage ?

Can you post an image of the outer edge of the coin?

Ok here’s the edge of the coin above. It doesn’t appear to have any damage. I checked all the other ones I have and the edges are good on them as well. I keep asking myself why would anyone want to acid etch coins. But I can see where it could be lucrative if you could pull off a homemade error of some sort. Any thanks again for the professional opinions. I really appreciate it.

I used to acid etch coins in my chemistry classes so my students would have a good object lesson (volumes of brown gas produced). Some people do it just b/c its there.

I have seen this same look though on coins that have been deliberately held hard up against a wire wheel. Some little boy I know used to do it back in the early 70s just to see what funny looking things he could make appear on the coin.

Learn something new everyday. I guess the old adage about doing something because it’s there or because I can still holds true. It’s just odd that I have 6 of them all different dates but each coin is almost identical when you compare the surfaces. Thanks again for your expertise sir !
