Yearly changes in Coin

#1 Unread post by Mary.Mattey »

Hi Friends

Is there a book or website that shows the changes by coin from year to year? For example - Change in designer initials (straight G vs Curved G)?

Any help is appreciated!

I think the only thing you can do is research each series to find this info b/c Its usually what specialists are interested in. Basically spending time with a search engine is how this info is found.

But there is false data out there also such as the 72-D "No FG" half. Since the Red Book lists it, and the companies slab them, yet they are just a case where the FG was polished off of the die. I saw some websites when I was first studying these where people were trying to say there were legitimate ones missing just the F as well.

In your opinion, is the cherry pickers guide a good book to own?

Yes, but it only covers Die varieties NOT Error coins. Two different things. I own both Volumes, but they are very pricey today. I would get the cheapest that you can find. Maybe a slightly older edition? Good Luck. :)

Yes - admittedly, in 2011 when I got serious about the hobby again, I used my Cherry Pickkers' books for a couple of months going through most of my coins I had packed away for years. After awhile it became obvious as to what an actual error looks like, and so I have not opened the books in years now. I probably should sell them so they can get use again.

BTW - come to think of it, this fits your initial question. I did find some of the oddball things in these books, like the Walking LIberty 1944-D variety that has hand engraved initials on the die, so there are some great nuggets of info in the books that also benefited me greatly.

I would not spend time on minor changes, focus on the varieties that count.

You go to PCGS price guide and NGC variety plus, CONECA variety vista, Wexlers doubleddie.com and buy Cherry Picker's Guide, 2023 Red Book Price Guide and Strike It Rich with Pocket Change.

First - Daniel he is spot on with what he recommended.

In my own experience I have seen where with things like DDOs and DDRs, it takes a pretty dramatic one to get a premium. As an example, with cents, I consider the obvious 1995 DDO as being a good idea of the lower end of a "good" DDO (typically sold for 50.00 or so). Obviously the 1955 DDO is the king of DDOs. The 1972 FS101 (typical 325+) is what I personally see as a solid "good" DDO. Prices seem to reflect this.

So I don't even pay attention to what I call the micro-doubled dies (or RPMS that are not very obvious). There are a lot of these "lesser looking" errors out there. So filling an album page with something needing high magnification to see the difference is not something I enjoy.
