1. Post a front and back image of your coin with a specific question about what you’re seeing or asking about and one coin per topic.
2. Please remove coin from the holder unless it’s US or an official mint case or unless it is graded by a grading service.
3. Images should be taken by a camera or cell phone camera, we ask that members don’t use images through a microscope screen.
4. Always start your own topic, please don’t ask about your coin or post your coin in someone else’s coin topic.
5. Do not send private messages about your coin unless an Admin ask you too and the same for sending emails through the board.
6. No spam. Do not post any links to your coin or other non-coin websites.
7. Always be respectful even if something makes you upset or you don’t agree with a member. You can always get a second opinion elsewhere. If you have an issue then politely ask an admin in an PM. PM’s are for issues, technical and personal, but not for coin questions (refer to number 5 on this list). 1978 S (proof) Penny with Errors
This is from the same bag of coins I brought at a yard sale.
I use the negative setting on my phone so I can see all the hidden details.

All damage.
Multiple proof coins in a bag banging around with each other explained what happened.

You have an impaired proof meaning it has contact marks. Never believe the US mint put hidden details in coins. You look for known varieties or you will drive yourself crazy looking for little anomalies on coins.

Re: 1978 S (proof) Penny with Errors
If someone wanted to catch an okapi, they would have to know what one looks, where they live, etc.
The same goes for coin errors. You have to know what an error actually is before you will can identify one.
Save Yourself time, effort, and disappointment...don’t learn the coin hobby backwards.
Looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage or useless machine doubling, die deterioration, etc.
Spend some initial time at places like error-ref.com, doubleddie.com, varietyvista.com, conecaonline.org, coppercoins.com etc. to find what actual and collectable coin errors look like.
A good way to start is, for instance, separate a bunch of pennies by date. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.

OK thanks! A local coin dealer pointed the error on back out to me. I didn't find it listed, however it is an unusual mark.

The pictures shown make it impossible to be sure of what, on the REV, you are calling an error.
Here is some help for making the camera focus on the coin:

Re: 1978 S (proof) Penny with Errors
Most coin dealers don't have a clue about mint errors and some just tell you something to make you feel good or to shut you up, and I mean that in a nice way. I don't do it, but some dealers just can't say " I don't see anything with your coin". Nope, so when a customer comes in talking about marks and shadows and errors they just say, yeah, I see something there. If there was something about this coin good he would have made an offer.
