I am not sure what to make of this BU? dime that has this ragged pattern all over the whole dime -- Obv and Rev. Was the Planchet or the die at fault?
It seems as if the pattern was there before the coin went through the striking of the coin.
Anyway thanks to all who are willing and able to help me sort out this error and if not an error, please describe for me what the reason is!!

Not an error. This is a normal Mercury Dime that was immersed in harsh acid at some point after it was struck.
Post-Mint damage, not a mint error.

I agree - nitric acid bath. I used to do this all the time (but not with silver!) to show my Chemistry class students how violently nitric acid reacts with metals.
Although from what I see int he picture, this one may have had both faces pushed very hard against a wire wheel.

I agree, it was placed into some caustic liquid. This means this coin cannot be a BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) coin.Energyuser701 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 7:26 pm I am not sure what to make of this BU? dime that has this ragged pattern all over the whole dime -- Obv and Rev.
