This coin appears to be environmentally damaged.

What's the best way to tell this? I wouldn't have posted if it was more obvious. I seen no other coloring, or previous color, and the detail on me Roosevelt doesn't seem to be effected by this discoloring. How do I tell in the future?

Potting the weight would likely confirm it is just environmental staining.

Dimes, and other clad coins, are not plated. The word clad means they have a core (copper) sandwiched, or "clad" with, a top and bottom layer of another metal (alloy).

At present only US pennies are plated.

Coins come into contact with a lot of different things which can chemically react with the metal in them.

Thank you, I appreciate the response. I'm trying to learn so I don't keep asking dumb questions.

I used to tell my students there is no such thing as a dumb when someone is seriously trying to learn. If we do not ask, we do not learn. :)
