1972 half dollar double die?

#1 Unread post by CharRom »

I went to the bank and purchased what they ad in half dollars. I sorted them and started going thru them today. I see what I believe is slight doubling on half of them so far BUT I just cam across this coin. I definitely see doubling in STATES OF AMERICA and in F DOLLAR as well on th tip of the eagles wing. Is this a true double die?

Images are a bit blurry, but this appears to be machine doubling.

Here is a way to find immediate answers when finding something you suspect is a doubled die, RPM, or OMM:
Please click the following link:

Immediate Answers - How to find your Doubled Die or RPM online

Note:
As you already know...If you do not find an EXACT match to your coin listed using this easy method, then you most likely have a damaged coin or other issues like (non collectable) machine doubling, die deterioration doubling, etc. (look these up at error-ref.com)

Thank you! I can actually see the difference now. Looks like machine doubling is sloppy and true doubling is letters crisp over other crisp letters!

I had to go through my new half dollars but I finally finished sorting out pennies and I am ready to start those next week. Hopefully I can find one or 10 🤣 Thank you to your recommendation to begin with pennies. I actually like pennies the best so far.
