Mexican coin cleaned?

#1 Unread post by agiese14 »

I just watched Dan's youtube video from the other day on cleaned coins and recommended going here and asking questions, so here I am! I bought this coin very recently and I have had local coin shop verify the metal content and authenticity, but it was at the very end of the day and the employee there at the moment wasn't too sure to definitively say about the coin being cleaned. With my camera I cannot get a closer view and keep it in focus, this is the best zoom I can get.

There is no cartwheel effect. Behind the letters and around the edges of the coin's image, the coin is much more reflective of light, starting to get a mirror effect. There is weakness in the letters of La Libertad, I have seen images of others of this coin on the internet with similar weaknesses in those letters. On the obverse depending on the angle there does appear to be faint, perfectly straight parallel lines, though I have seen images of NGC & PCGS graded problem free coins of this type also with faint perfectly straight parallel lines on it.

Definitely would like to try and learn more about this coin, I do not know much about them, and if it were cleaned, then decide if it's worth going through the process of having it graded / authenticated, I've never done that before, it looks pretty pricey for a single coin submission.

I snapped two photos with two angles against the light, to try and get the different views of the reflectiveness of the light.

It does appear cleaned and you can learn more about the coin by searching NGC website, plus they have potential values for the different grades.

Thank you, cleaned was my assumption when I got the coin, though it wasn't clear. Recent sale prices for cleaned versus not cleaned of these in AU condition are significant in their difference, just wanting to be sure. It's tough for me to get out to a local shop, do not have one in my home town. Appreciate the time!
