Guessing this is machine doubling

#1 Unread post by lostthegroove »

Super new to coins and spending way to much time looking at old coins from my grandparents safe after they passed. Im sure I will get bitched at for being a newb on this stuff but this caught my eye as I have never seen one like this. Just wanted to see what way more informed people say about it so I can learn. Faint S between D and S / "United S States" 1968 D Penny. Am I correct that this is machine doubling?

Thanks.

Hi. Thanks so much. Just crazy to me that this S shape is not real and my mind is making it up. Thanks for your help.

New zoom added. Am I really making that up in my head? Nobody else sees the matching S?

I see it...... but is not a real 'S'

Try spinning the coin around while you're looking at it.

Thank you for at least helping me believe I am not crazy and someone else can see it too. ha. The matching arches just completely convince my brain that it is the same s. Again, thanks for your help. This is a very nice resource for new people like myself. Have a great day.

When you understand the minting process, you will understand it is impossible for an extra design element to be on a coin.

Here is a sight showing how the dies for making coins are made. After seeing it you should be able to conclude what you are seeing is physically impossible to be what your mind "wants" it to be through the natural process we all constantly employ without even knowing it: pareidolia.
