1943 steel penny
I have a 1943 stell penny. Very odd. It looks like copper clad with zinc over it. It doesn't look like rust or painted. The ware marks show copper. The back side has a nick down to the copper. Thank You

Re: 1943 steel penny
it is rust, and the coin has been manipulated in the form of cleaning and or replated at one time. Just a normal but damaged cent. You always weigh coins like this and use a magnet, those to things alone rule out off metal planchet.

Re: 1943 steel penny, enlarged as requested
Paul, I hope you can tell me more about this coin. Here is the enlarged date. The best I can do. This is all new to me. Thank You

Re: 1943 steel penny
It's not an enlarged date, that is the result of being plated or die deterioration. Weight and use a magnet.

Re: 1943 steel penny
I see today, where the OP go. Damage. This coin I see in a bag of a few hundreds. Those coins are 1948 modify date and was a investigation from RLE. What happened I have no idea but they confiscate more then 2000 coins. You has one of them fake 1943 coins.
PS: If you make an XRF you will find that the plating contain lead which was never use by the Mint.

What is XRF? Am always seeing terms don't understand. Have a steel penney, probably is one of those replated ones. What's it supposed to weigh?

Like this from the spectrum of materials we can determine which material was involved.X-ray fluorescence is the emission of characteristic "secondary" X-rays from a material that has been excited by being bombarded with high-energy X-rays or gamma rays.
You do not have an legitim 1943 steel penny. I see the cooper and an modified 8 to 3 in order to simulate an error.
