I did some research and found this:
Looks like a large letter variety to me but let's wait for more people to chime in.
Also, have you got authenticity of the coin? Looks like a scarce coin to have. https://www.usacoinbook.com/coins/2548/ ... e-letters/

Possible. I'd rather wait for Paul, Daniel, Earle42 and the rest of the gang. In the meantime, I'll be doing some research on the matter.Dutch-Tigger wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 9:59 pmHey Sal I was puzzled by the location of the "5" as he was as well. could there be a chance of a fake ?SensibleSal66 wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 9:57 pmGreetings as well.Dutch-Tigger wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 9:11 pmGreetings, this is out of my comfort zone, but someone with this Forte` should be by to help you out with this very intriguing circumstance on your coin.77wings33 wrote: ↑Sun May 28, 2023 7:19 pm I have an 1830 capped bust half dollar and I'm trying to figure out if it is a large letters variety or just a regular 1830 capped bust, I went on PCGS website, and they show large letters a large E and C however mine is what looks like a regular E. but my C is large and my 5 is large the C is almost touching the branch and the 5 is almost touching the eagles claw and the arrows feather PCGS doesn't show a 5 this large can anybody help identify this coin. I wouldn't say fake. Probably cleaned. A coin from 1830 with absolutely no tone?

Re: 1830 cap bust half Lg Ltrs?
I agree with large letters and cleaned.
Sometimes when determining varieties it helps to think outside the box. Instead of looking at, for example, just the letter C and trying to match it up, look around the coin at corresponding things such as the shape of areas inside curves. In this case, look at the top "loop" of the last S in STATES. Both are very different and make it easy to see the variety. There probably are others, this is just the first one I noticed.
