Post Mint Damage. If it didn't happen at the mint and this didn't happen there then it's PMD, I don't know how else to explain it.

Greetings, Agree with Sal, and this may add some light on your coin as well. Check out Daniel`s other videos as well and subscribe if you like ,very informative indeed!billi wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 1:14 am Wondering if more experienced trained eyes could determine from the pics if this seems like an at-home project, pmd (ie from another coin being pressed against this Quarter for a long time), or if this could be a mint error.
To note, either under coin microscope or to the naked good eye we can see the marks near Washington's head and "AMERICA" is certainly the Lincoln memorial at a diagonal-upside down angle

In order to know mint errors, it is essential to knowing the minting process and the die making process. That way when you find something you can try to figure out if what you have could have been a part of those processes:billi wrote: ↑Tue May 30, 2023 11:19 am Thanks everyone and @Sensiblesal I've never worked at the mint so how am I supposed to know? In other words, you repeating the same thing over and over isn't teaching me anything. Why not guide me to as WHY its PMD and what sources could help me make the determination in the future?
Here are some videos to help:
How Coins are made:
How Coins (and errors) Are Made
Die making:
https://www.coinnews.net/2014/01/06/how ... uce-coins/
Also, read error-ref.com like a book. Go there and read, read, read.
And one more thing: Most odd looking things on coins are just post mint damage. So looking for random anomalies on coins and hoping they match up to something collectable will take you a lot more time, wasted effort, and disappointment repeatedly finding out you have nothing but post mint damage or useless machine doubling, die deterioration, etc.
A good way to start is, for instance, is to get a box of rolls of pennies from the bank. Separate all the pennies by date and mint mark. Go to varietyvista.com and, date by date, use the reference there to see what errors are known for that specific coin/mint mark. Look for those specific errors/varieties using the pictures provided. After doing this for awhile you will KNOW what an actual error looks like and not have to waste time on face value and damaged coins.

Vids of the minting process.

Almost everything you will find on a coin that is odd looking will be post mint damage. Coins send a very short time in the mint which uses a limited number of machines. Hence there isa limited number of legitimate things that are mint errors.
But coins can send up to a century or more in circulation being subjected every day to being dropped, scuffed, hit, chemically worked on etc.
If you want to get an idea of what to look for, then get a box of penny rolls from the bank. Sort them by date and mint mark. Go to varietyvista.com and use the pictures there to find an EXACT match for one of your coins. If you do not find an exact match, then it will almost always be a form of non collectible doubling on the Coin (see error-ref.com for machine doubling and die deterioraton doubling), or post mint damage.
