Wild West Wednesday! Pow! Pow!
Hello all. I have a new thread here.
I'm calling this one "Wild West Wednesday!"
To qualify, coins must be from 1865-1895, just after the American Civil War.
Summary and Definition of Wild West
Definition and Summary: The Wild West was so named for the lawlessness of the untamed territories west of the Mississippi River - the western United States during its frontier period. The period of the Wild West was from 1865 - 1895, a period of thirty years. The 'Old West' was famous for cowboys, native Indians, the lawmen, gunslingers, the pioneers, the prospectors, the gamblers, the scouts, the outlaws, the gangs and the gunfighters. Famous people of the Wild West included Wyatt Earp, "Wild Bill" Hickok, "Billy the Kid", gripe Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, Frank and Jesse James and the Clanton gang. The most notorious event was the Gunfight at the O.K. Coral

Here are a couple coins from that time period.

Don't get more wild west than a silver dollar. I took this using Daniel's Photo tutorial. I did two different lightings, one with a solid ring light for a full color toning shot, and one with 4 individual lights to show an in-hand look:

I do not own this, but it was part of an auction of legitimate items from the old West that I saw online many years ago. It is a badge made from a Morgan Dollar:
The first "Seated Liberty" dollar I owned. A fake I bought to study them:

I agree. I would love to have an authentic one like this. The other coin I would like is one of these:
original pictures from:

I have seen a few of these in the Annie Oakley Museum in her hometown of Greenville, Ohio.
Annie Oakley used to shoot and hit coins tossed into the air. WHile on European tours she did many of these English pennies. original pictures from:

Yes, b/c they were being tossed into the air, she was using a .22 with light loads. That way the bullet would not travel a mile or so and land someplace that would injure someone.
My granddaughter, Oakley, holding Annie Oakleys actual .22 rifle last summer during Annie Oakley Days in Greenville, OH.

Not just tossing them in the air, but holding them in their hands while someone else shot it.Earle42 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 07, 2024 10:40 pm Yes, b/c they were being tossed into the air, she was using a .22 with light loads. Also that's so cool that she got to hold that. I'm glad they let people do this. It stinks when something just rots behind glass indefinitely.

Thanks, an she is the type that no matter when she gets her picture taken she is somehow naturally posing to make a very cute picture. I am personally glad for the white gloves b/c, having restoration of tools as a hobby, I know just how much fingerprints etc. can soil metal. It was a beautiful gun.

Greenville is a little town and has a little town mentality. The museum is, as far as I know, not funded other than donations and fundraisers. Despite that it is amazing. During the annual Annie Oakley days the town holds the museum charges 10.00 for an adult to hold the gun, and kids are only 5.00. To me that was well worth it (although I did not hold it b/c I was too excited to have my granddaughter do it).
Annie is one of my favorite old west people. I also learned, after moving here, that the first place she was on stage was Springfield, OH at the Springfield fairgrounds. I have been annually attending the largest glass insulator show in the world there since 2001 when the show location was moved there from London, OH. So this was a neat piece of history I once stumbled onto as well.
