Dug silver coins

#1 Unread post by Metal_kettle »

Daniel, I enjoy your videos and thanks for shareing the knowledge of coins.
My question is about dug silver coins. Will they affect the grading quality?
Here is a good example of soil affecting or preserving a coin its a 1919 Buffalo Nickel it came out of the mud edge of a lake like the day it was lost. I have NEVER dug anything even remotely clean to this one they are usually for me are Brown weathered. Thanks

Michael

Buffalo Nickels aren't silver, they are made of nickel, but yes dug coins will grade lower or most likely get no grade at all.

I know nicked are made of nickel, I just wanted to show this unique coin condition for being dug. I did have a dug Coin slabbed ANACS it came back exactly what the dealer said it was fine.

Here is a Mercury Dime it's dug. I have a bunch Standing Liberty Quarters that have dates including the 1916 that was dug in my home town at a local park in 2001. This park gave up so many coins, a couple of tokens a CW and one Hard Times.
Plenty of Revoulitionary War relics.
After of years of not finding much a Wheat Cent here there I decided try edge of lake water was down exposed area and I killed it..I can't Recall what detector was used first I know for sure I took the Etrac, Coinstrike,F70, Explorer and Spectrum.
I thought for sure this place was cleaned out but wow I tried a different spot by the lake same results all coins were under mud hidden silver was so tarnished. First area low trash second had plenty beer cans.
