1917 D Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 Full Head ?
Hello
I bought a 1917 D Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 about 3 years ago. It was sold as uncirculated with full head.... Wanted to get help if you think this coin is worth sending into PCGS for grading..
Thanks very much for any help...

Hi Phil, it would be best to get the coin from behind or on top of the glass, then set it on a black nonreflective background, like a black microfiber cloth. Then set the camera on something, and take the pic. Also if you can focus in on the "head" it would be nice. We appreciate your effort to put the photos up, but they are not good enough to determine anything.

agree. cropped images on a black or white background would be great. I know it is very specific, and I know you are new here, but it really does help.

Is this coin in a "Capital" plastic screw closure slab?
Re: 1917 D Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 Full Head ?
Hello:
Thanks for the good advice. Hopefully I did this correct this time. I do greatly appreciate your patience as I am a new subscriber, and you tube channel member. I have attached new photos and hopefully you can advise me if this coin is worth slabbing ...... Again I bought it about 3 years ago at the Baltimore Whitman show as an uncirculated coin with full head. The coin does have nice luster, but has a lot of toning around Liberty head area, and in the fields around the coins lettering. Please review all the photos as I tried to show and describe the coin as best I can..
Thanks again for all your help....
Phil

Looks nice.
I would hope that you would get a FH here?
As to what they give you for a grade…?

I agree this should be submitted, it has potential and I have some FH up on my site with less head details. Images could be better but I can see enough here.

Re: 1917 D Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 Full Head ?
full head indeed. I am not sure if anyone would agree with me, so don't actually do it, but I would personally water/acetone/MS70 on this coin, as it seems to have some superficial dirt on it. I want to here everyone else's opinion on this as well
based on what I am seeing as is, I am thinking in the low-mid MS rage for this coin

Monsterbug1.
Thanks for your comment and advise. Would this process of using acetone / water possibly jeapordize the coin in receiving an MS grade and the coin being returned as a " details cleaning "...

Re: 1917 D Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 Full Head ?
Hey Phil, now that is a photo. If you use Acetone, Do Not Rub, dab. This is something that Daniel has repeated time after time. If you rub, you will disturb the surface finish, and this rubbing can even remove some of the alloy from the surface, then with that on the swab, you WILL get scratches. Oh yeah, great coin by the way, and worth grading. Here is something else, I have a Python built spreadsheet/chart and in general the moving average is showing a definite upward bias for PCGS coins, I have no idea why, only that it is.

Thanks again for your advice, and coming back a 2nd time....Let me make sure that I understand what you are suggesting me to do. Take acetone and apply with a cotton swab. Do I just let the coin dry with the acetone applied or do I rinse off with water ? Can this be done several times as needed without harming the coin? As you can tell I have never done this before ..
Thanks again !!! Happy New Year too !!

Re: 1917 D Standing Liberty Quarter Type 1 Full Head ?
Former chemistry teacher here: Acetone cannot chemically or physically alter the metal. It can only dissolve a foreign substance form the surface. Therefore the professionals and the hobby do not call this "cleaning a coin." You have done nothing to the coin's metal itself, you have lifted a foreign substance from the surface - which is called conservation..Phil P wrote: ↑Thu Dec 30, 2021 11:53 am Coin Mule:

You can take a small jar (I use a baby food jar), put some acetone in the bottom - enough to cover the coin - and insert the coin. Let it sit for a minute or so and remove it. There is no need to rinse b/c the acetone cannot exist in liquid form at room temperature and so will totally evaporate from the surface. I put the cover on the jar just b/c acetone evaporates quickly, but putting enough in to begin with 1/4'" will not evaporate within a minute.
Repeat as many times as you like.
Acetone must be labeled as "Pure Acetone." Inexpensive and sold in the health a beauty dept. at Walmart b/c its sold as a fingernail polish remover. Fingernail polish has perfumes and colorants added to it, but pure acetone will not.
I suggest a dip like this b/c there is a small possibility of rubbing the coin when using a Q-tip. I have done the above with hundreds of coins over the last 11 years with absolutely nothing showing up from having used acetone.

I just looked back at the pics and am not sure what you are seeing that might benefit the coin from using acetone? But...you have it in hand which means you see things the pics do not show.

Hi Earle
The coin has some dark spots especially on reverse. Hoping it will remove them. Not sure if dirt or toning. Hopefully it will remove both.
Thanks again for your post.
Happy New Year!!
