Some more REALLY old gold coins
Hey everyone,
Happy New Year’s Eve!
A few days ago I shared with you all a unique coin that I
had picked up. A 1/24th stater (called a “mysemihecte”) from 650-600 BC Ionia.
Well ever since receiving that coin in the mail I was interesting in getting more.
So I did. ^_^
This is a 1/12th stater or “hemihecte” (2x value of previous coin I showed) from the same time and place (Ionia).
IONIA. Uncertain mint. Ca. 650-600 BC. EL 1/12 stater or hemihecte (8mm, 1.12 gm). NGC XF 4/5 - 3/5. Lydo-Milesian standard. Uncertain design / Incuse square punch with irregular interior surfaces. SNG Kayhan 687.
I also picked up a 1/6th stater or “hecte”: IONIA. Uncertain mint. Ca. 600-550 BC. EL sixth-stater or hecte (10mm, 2.34 gm). NGC VG 3/5 - 4/5. Lydo-Milesian standard. Head of lion or seal left, pellet or sun on forehead / Two incuse square punches, side by side, with irregular geometric interior surfaces. Weidauer -. cf. Linzalone 1108 (Phocaea, seal, hecte).
One thing I really love about this type of coinage is the extreme age and affordability. For history nerds like me the older a coin is the more I like it and to have some of the first coins ever minted in human history at an affordable price is definitely a grand slam in my book!

Re: Some more REALLY old gold coins
Thanks for taking a peek! :)
I know I've posted a lot of coins lately so people are probably getting a bit annoyed.
But I've just been particularly active in buying lately so don't worry it's not a regular thing. xD

Speaking for myself, I am definitely not annoyed and never will be. Plus this is a Coin Forum, if you don't post them here, where else are you going to post them where a group of coin enthusiasts can enjoy seeing them. We all should be excited to see all types of posted coins, especially Ancients which are part of our world history. Please keep 'em coming.Gam3rBlake wrote: ↑Sat Jan 01, 2022 7:45 am

I just don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to seek attention. Normally I don’t post this much I’ve just picked up alot of cool coins lately.
The thing I find coolest about these Ionian coins is the time period they are from. This is the period that came right after the Greek Dark Ages that followed the devastating Bronze Age Collapse of several major civilizations such as the Mycenaeans (really old school Greeks) and the Minoans.
Robert Drews describes the collapse as "the worst disaster in ancient history, even more calamitous than the collapse of the Western Roman Empire".
A range of explanations for the collapse have been proposed, without any achieving consensus. Several factors probably played a part, including climatic changes (such as drought or those caused by volcanic eruptions), invasions by groups such as the Sea Peoples, the effects of the spread of iron metallurgy, developments in military weapons and tactics, and a variety of failures of political, social and economic systems.
Think about Rome. Long before Augustus. Centuries before even Caesar. When Rome was a kingdom of about 100 years old before it became a Republic and then an Empire. Everyone thinks of Rome as incredibly ancient but what was going on in Rome when these coins were minted? Historians have basically no idea because it was the reign of the legendary early kings of Rome and the oldest historians wrote centuries after it so its full of myths and legends rather than historical fact.
We know very little about the people who used these coins and they represent a very important period of human history. These are the people who created the Ancient Greece that we think of when we think of the founding of Democracy in Athens and the epic last stand of Leonidas at Thermopylae. The people who used these coins were the ancestors of those Greeks who founded cities like Athens and Sparta and the contemporaries of the people who founded Rome long before it become a colossal empire that ruled over 20% of the human population at the time.

But then we might think you are hoarding all your good fines and not sharing them with usI just don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to seek attention. Normally I don’t post this much I’ve just picked up alot of cool coins lately.
I do know where you are coming from. But over the years on forums I have learned people get excited for others when they see cool coins like this rather than thinking the person is showing off. For some of us the only people we can share our fun from getting a new coin with is forum friends. Share away - the more the merrier!
If mine were more accessible to me (safe deposit), I would take more pics and share as well.

Re: Some more REALLY old gold coins
Why don't you get a safe and keep them at home? Eventually the safe will pay for itself in yearly safety deposit box fees. I used to keep mine in a safety deposit box as well but thought to myself I'm paying rent and don't want that lol. Unless you are concerned that your home will get broken into if you keep your coins on premises.

Re: Some more REALLY old gold coins
I come from the time when privacy was important to people. Now that I am online and its easy to find I am a coin collector, I just feel better knowing the coins are inaccessible here. I want to pass them on to my kids. My Grandfather and I spent years together collecting and when he passed, he left me the ones he had collected before I came along. I don't really care about the monetary value they might have as much as I value making sure they cannot be taken from my home and my kids will get them.
