Found Over 150!! 1921 1922 silver dollars Morgan's and Peace
Here's some pictures of my first coin find and half were found with no metal detector.here is my question...did I make a big mistake by selling nearly all of these for melt price? Also if I find more should I take the chance and get a few graded? Over 150 found so far in one location.

I would get a 2022 Red Book price guide, you can buy it at any book store or my website portsmouthcoinshop.com
At least you can check the dates and mints to make sure there's no low mintage key dates. Although melt is a bit low for silver dollars these look pretty roached from being in the ground.

Awesome finds; my grandfather collected coins off-and-on for about 30-40 years it looks like and even still I only inherited a few Morgans and one or two Peace dollars! Sure, they seem to mostly all be in pretty bad shape but I would suggest doing as Daniel says and either finding a coin price guide in paper form or online to better judge whether to melt your findings or not. While melting is "guaranteed money" sometimes it is a bit better to try and sell these off, especially given how valuable even "crappy" Peace dollars and certain key date Morgans are. At the very least, they may get in the hands of somebody who has really wanted that particular year and grade of the coin(s) you have. I'm sure a dealer local to you (probably many) would love to take a look at these, perhaps even offer some $$ for them!Jessie1985 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 11, 2022 1:36 am Here's some pictures of my first coin find and half were found with no metal detector.here is my question...did I make a big mistake by selling nearly all of these for melt price? If they're in good shape like the ones you posted singular pictures of the dealer might offer slightly above melt or give you a slightly better deal than just melt. As Daniel and CoinPyro have said it is ideal to at least clean the date area at least to try to know if it is a key date or not if unknown. Well this will hurt the numismatic value but these were in the ground after all. How did you find these and so many? Did you find them individually or literally found 150 in the same area!!! If it was the latter I bet these were from an old bank robbery or maybe someone who hoarded these during the depression or later that just forgot about them in the ground.

All in the same roughly 50 yard square in the lake I live near just off the shoreline there was a tornado that had came through about a year and a half ago and I believe this is what exposed a few of them for me to spot a few while arrowhead hunting after that it was all over I just kept finding sometimes none sometimes 30 in one or two hours. And still finding them. Oh and they are all only the two years 1921 morgans and 1922 peace no other coins at all found there also some of them are really toned beautifully does that mean they were exposed to sulpher on the bags they were in possibly because haven't found any bags but still finding coins I need a dredge any ideas?

A mistaken mindset is that these companies are just "the way to go." Using them without losing money is a lot more complicated, but a lot of people don't take the time to do the homework and end up losing money. Also if I find more should I take the chance and get a few graded?
Watch Daniel's video here and also read the post under it. Its worth your time only if you don't like wasting money

I want to chime in, I wouldn't of sold them these where found in a lake after a storm yes? what lake how big is it or was it a shipping area at one time? you probably wont find a the bag maybe parts of it as they are canvas and would just rot away in the water.
toning isn't from sulfur the human hand would produce more sulfur, what type of trash did you find with the coins? metal wire? wood? have you documented your find and the trash with it? are you finding coins stacked on each other?
