Thoughts about getting a coin graded

#1 Unread post by 40 Rounds »

Hello all. Would be interested in thoughts about getting a coin conserved and graded. The coin is an 1891 Seated Liberty dime…no mintmark. It is not exceptionally rare I know but I do feel it is in above average condition and am interested in maybe getting conserved as well as slabbed. It has sentimental value to me and I am not overly concerned with increasing its value by being graded. So my question is do you think it would be a good candidate for conservation and grading despite the oxidation it has on it. Thank you

If it is truly only for sentimental purposes...why not?

Encapsulating it would only serve to preserve it...for sentimental purposes.

I’m kinda new to the coin world but I’d say that’s a beautiful dime, personally between it behind sentimental and having a good look to it still I would have it slabbed. I believe you can have a custom label on the grade to make it more meaningful to you as well.

Hi 40, PCGS has a restoration service, they "restore" and then encapsulate it. There are risks, if it is not genuine, they will send it back in a body bag, (I am not a dime guy so I don't know if it is or not), or if it is "details" they will send it back with that designation. But if all goes well, it would be nice to have for sentimental value. You won't get your money back on it, but you said that's not the reason, so why not.

Please call NGC and PCGS and ask them the cost of doing this.

Thank you all for the feedback. I tried to go to coin dealer I have purchased from in the past as they will submit coins to PCGS for customers but they basically said it was too common a date and corroded and it would not be graded. Sounds like I need to call them and go direct on my own.

Why are you not listening to experienced advice? It going to cost you more than the coin is worth to do what you want. Once you pay the membership fees, submission fees, conservation fees and shipping it's going to cost doubled what the coin is going to be worth.

All you have to do it look at PCGS price guide and look at the potential value for the grade you think your coin is. It's not worth submitting.

Let's see using simple economics.

Smallest membership plan
$69 Annual Membership
Basic level with
submission privileges.
No Vouchers
10.00 Handling Fee
Grading Fee $38
Gold Shield $5
Return Shipping fee $22
Coin Value- XF-40 $75.00
Shipping fees to PCSG- Approx. $10-$20
Let’s add all this up
Membership $69.00 +
Grading Fee $38.00 = $107 +
gold shield $5.00 (due to date) = $112+
Return Shipping $22.00 = $134+
Shipping to PCGS $15.00? = $149+
Handling Charge $100 = $159
Total Cost $159
Coin Value
Someone said XF40 which is worth $75
So, you have a XF40 coin worth $75 subtract all the fees you paid, so take $159 – coin value 75 which equals a net loss of -84.00.
