1780 Austrian coin?

#1 Unread post by claudewill1 »

Hi,
I bought the following coin which I know is Austrian from a coin dealer the other day for melt + 1.50. I was trying to figure out exactly which coin it was and what the silver content is? I tried doing an image search on image.google.com, however, that didn't return anything helpful.

I don't really know much of anything about world coins

Thanks

this coin is also likely a restrike made later, but still a silver coin though :)

Thank you for the input; I'm just trying to figure out the silver content. Paying melt + 1.50 had the coin at 20.60; that was on a day when bullion wise they didn't have anything as people were making a rush for silver since prices were going up.

I would say looking at the values for the real coin that @muswell65 provided references for, it could be an original, most world coins don't really seem to be as valuable as US coins of the same dates. There was a pile of them in the display case at the dealer. Everyone else there was trying to get silver eagles, I believe that sold quite a few monster boxes worth. I besides this coin I was able to easily get 5$ in 90% dimes while I was there.

One reason I believe it could be original because there are no exact dimensions on really anything, it is thinner or thicker in different areas and in some areas, the coin is less rounded than the others, which seems more likely of an older coin.

The broach on the shoulder shows it was a restrike. If it were original it would be a solid ring not a ring made out of little circles. They are usually 80% silver.
