Another ICG Question: 1880-S Morgan MS67+

#1 Unread post by RevElvisLee »

I don't normally deal with this high of a grade when it comes to Morgans. The highest I own is an MS65 in an old ANACS soap bar. Obviously, even though it's a common date, the grade puts it into the $1k+ range. The catch is... ICG again! I have an opportunity to get this at less than half what the price guide values it at, and Greysheet only goes up to MS67. SO, my question for you Morgan experts is this: Does this reasonably look like a strong 67+ to you? I understand proper analysis would require holding it in your hands, so I understand that limitation. But if I'm about to do something stupid, I know one of you guys will school me on it. :D

Don't ever buy a coin based on a perceived future grade IF you have to ask other people if it's a good idea. If you buy looking forward then you should be able to have the knowledge and bravery to go it alone. It's a nice coin and I would buy it, but no way can anyone comment on a MS67+ grade or any grade that high.

Well, Daniel... I choked. Too close to the rent bill, I guess. Somebody else got this coin for a "best offer" even after the seller had reduced it to $695. My guess is around $650. I don't know what your take on this is, but if it hadn't been a "conditional rarity", I would've been more apt to irritate my landlord in order to get the coin. In this case, however, if it had lost a half-grade during crossover, I would've still been in okay shape. Fortune favors the bold and well-funded, but if I had tried to cross it and PCGS decided it was only 66+, it would've dropped from $1650 to $550. I'm not sure if that's a failure of bravery or triumph of having the sense to know that I don't know enough. Regardless, your comment was helpful to me, and I thank you for it.

Not too harsh at all. In fact it's just what I needed to hear. I can't really afford the loss, and your advice informed my decision to pass. If I could afford the loss, I would've gone for it - also partially based on your advice. So I think you hit it just right. I'm not quite in the MS67 Morgan league just yet - if I were, I wouldn't have had to ask. Just as an aside, I did find a nice deal on an MS66+ 1904-O, certified by ICG, that wasn't such a gamble. I'm excited to see if it crosses (or I may crack it and send it raw) to PCGS at the same grade. I'll let you guys know, if you're interested. 👍
