$0.25 Washington Quarter (I think) - what kind of damage is this?

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

Couldn't get it to come through the photos no matter what I did with the lighting but there is indeed a slight outline of George on the obverse.

What kind of damage is this? It's pretty extreme and was found in a dollar roll so was squished almost to that size though they're already pretty similar.

I thought that too but then how to explain the shape on the reverse. Looks maybe more like a sander or file or something...? But there's no "streaks" from mechanical movement or at least that's what it seems. It's like the surface is tiny, tiny little beads of metal now.

Post mint damage. Nothing in the minting process would produce a coin looking like this.

Nitric acid or...possible extreme sandblasting???

My new theory is that it was someone's artistic expression of their opinion of the State series of quarters.
