Errors, varieties, key dates, etc. for Half Dollars

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

Besides varietyvista and wexler, are there any other good sites that have "what to look for" for U.S. Half Dollars? Mostly 20th century?

If you can't find it at CONECA or Wexlers then it's either not significant enough or a new discovery and you should send it to Wexler or Mike Diamond.

I have a cheat sheet I made/use for roll searching. Note it starts at 1971 and does not include silver b/c who wouldn't save the silver?
Download it here:

Note all No FGs except the 1982 are just grease filled dies and not actual errors. However, people do collect the 1972 and the 1983 despite them not being actual errors.

I included some nonesense listings I found on a website once where the author of the list said they had some with just one of the designer's initials missing. I need to remove these from that list sometime b/c I had them on the list just to see if I would find any for the fun of it. Any I found were put right back into the rolls

Do you not consider the 1969 D no FG as not being a real no FG?

That's awesome, thank you! Would it be alright if I bounced a few ideas off you in PM?

I have never personally seen one.

However, the criteria I think legitimate to use to determine an actual No FG variety is simple. On the 1972 and 1983 "No FGs", for example, the feathers surrounding the locale of the initials (tail feathers to the left and leg feathers to the right) are polished smooth. Of course since the polishing was for the general area (they were not trying to polish off JUST the initials for no reason), it makes sense that if they were zealous enough to accidentally remove the FG, then the rest of the details around that position would become polished (loss of detail) as well.

The 1982 No FG die (also has no serif on the 1 in the date indicating totally different die pairs than the regular 1982s) will typically have good details (no signs of polishing) on the feathers in those areas.
