Bulk Buffalo Nickels - what's a good deal?

#1 Unread post by musospuso »

I found a bag of 5,000 buffalo nickels which seem to be in poor to decent condition. I know nearly nothing about this particular series but would love to learn. What would be a good deal amount to get them at that would provide enough buffer for resell? I think I've heard ~$3 a nickel is decent but looking for advice. Looking forward to diving into this series if I can negotiate a good deal which may be highly possible.

I personally wouldn't do it. Sounds like a huge pile of someone else's less desirable coins.
Awaiting more advice....

Definitely a concern of mine. It might have been intentional but a lot of the coins visible seemed to be in decent shape...but again, don't know much about buffalos. So I did the math and each nickel is being sold for $0.3...less than face...weird?

EDIT: Derp, that is NOT less than face, lol. Still a lot less than $3 though.

The last coin show I attended had several vendors selling miscellaneous Buffaloes for $1 each. These were not in flips, just loose and a grab and go scenario. I think the difference though is that I was able to go through each coin and inspect it, with most of them grading between G-4 and F-12. In other words, lower grade coins. The ones I picked out were lower mintage dates, but no key dates were in these lots. I agree with everyone else, I think what is going to happen is you receiving a bunch of common dates in poor condition (you may not even be able to read the date on some). I’d stay away from these sakes and look for something you can see for yourself in person. Even at 30 cents each (I think that’s what you are saying in the math of the cost) the seller knows they are making a profit.

I value full date buffalos at $0.65, and no date/no mint mark buffalos at $0.15.
