What is actually going on with my 1991 P Roosevelt Dime?
Hello everyone!
I have been staring at this darn dime for too long. I have to know what happened to it. Bad metal mix? Acid? Just a dud dime? I have pictures and hopefully someone out there can shed some light on this one. The reeding is non existent for the most part and it looks more like an Oreo cookie to me than a clad dime . I didn’t know where else to post this topic so please excuse me if it’s in the wrong thread.
Thanks in advance!

Hello and Welcome! What you're seeing is a Dime that has been damaged by acidic material that has eaten away at the soft copper material. I actuallly have a dime like this but more pronounced.

Nothing in the minting process can produce something like this.
'The dime had short bath in acid that ate away the more soft copper exposed on the rim. The surface also looks stained. Just a damaged dime.

My suspicions are confirmed then. I didn’t think minting error, which was why I was kind of worried I was posting I the wrong spot. I just had to know what happened to it Thank you so much everyone!

Re: What is actually going on with my 1991 P Roosevelt Dime?
I have the same issue with my 1995p quarter. Mine doesn't appear to be as discolored as your example. It looks almost as if each layer was cut with a cookie cutter and then bonded together rather than cut from an already made sheet of material. The edges of the silver (I'm sorry I don't know the nickle layer is almost folded over the copper layer in some parts. Or it appears to be. I have pictures if anyone would want to see. To me, it appears that the issue is with the 'blank' that was used. The improper blank went through a normal minting rather than the error was minted incorrectly. I hope that makes sense. I don't believe that this coin has any of the signs of acid damage. It's heavily circulated for sure but not oddly discolored

These are not from anything in the minting process.
The cause has already been identified above: Anyone wanting to identify actual coin errors accurately needs to know the minting and die making procedures:
