1971D Kennedy Half Dollar. Is this caused by Die Deterioration

#1 Unread post by frankj »

1971 Kennedy Half Dollar 2.jpg
I have a n 1971D Kennedy Half Dollar and I am trying to figure out what caused the lines and marks on the coin. I looked on different error sites and didnt find any like this except on mad die clashes. It was a 1983 Kennedy and was similar to this one. Could this be a die clash?

This is not an error.

Obverse VLDS with heavy radial field fracture, polishing, & contact mark damage.

I detect no clash marks in your images posted here.

The "halo," around JFK, as Paul has said, is from where the die was polished to remove clash marks. This Kennedy Half date is known for being found with clash marks in those areas moreso than other dates (1983, as you mentioned, being another). The radial marks on the coin are from die deterioration as well.

Using the following graphic with overlay, note how the halo on yours is in the same areas as the REV design shows when clashed on the OBV.
